Tour Overview

Experience two of the most magical and sought-after bucket-list adventures in the Mexican Caribbean: a face-to-face encounter with ancient history and wild marine life. This 100% private tour seamlessly combines the majestic oceanfront ruins of Tulum with an unforgettable snorkeling excursion alongside sea turtles in their completely natural, protected habitat at Akumal Bay.

By booking an exclusive VIP service, you completely skip the slow-moving crowds, long lines, and endless multi-resort pickups of shared tour buses. We time our departures strategically so you arrive at each destination during the absolute best hours of the day—ensuring crystal-clear water visibility and a much more peaceful experience among the ruins.

Tulum: Ancient History Overlooking a Turquoise Sea

Perched dramatically on a rugged cliffside, the walled city of Tulum serves as a breathtaking window to the Caribbean. Your private, certified bilingual guide will bring history to life with fascinating narratives dating back to 564 A.D. You will enjoy a personalized 2-hour guided walk through this ancient fortress, discovering the mathematical and astronomical precision behind structures like El Castillo, which served as a prehistoric lighthouse for maritime navigation. Afterward, enjoy plenty of free time to capture iconic photos of the ruins contrasted against the white sand and turquoise waves below.

Akumal: A Protected Sea Turtle Sanctuary

Just 25 minutes down the coast lies Akumal—a Mayan name that translates literally to “Place of the Turtles.” This calm, shallow bay is naturally sheltered by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (the second largest reef system in the world), making it a year-round feeding ground for wild sea turtles. Equipped with premium snorkel gear, a life jacket, and accompanied by your dedicated guide, you will swim gently over the sea-grass beds to witness these majestic creatures up close in a safe, respectful, and deeply moving eco-adventure. It is very common to spot vibrant coral formations, tropical fish, and graceful stingrays along the way.

Oceanfront Mexican Lunch at the Bay

Snorkeling is fantastic for working up an appetite! To celebrate a perfect day, we have handpicked one of the premier beachfront restaurants in Akumal for your private group lunch. You will indulge in authentic Mexican cuisine with your choice of premium beef, pork, grilled chicken, or fresh local fish. Your meal includes a refreshing soft drink, local flavored water, or an ice-cold Mexican beer to toast to an unforgettable day.

Why Choose This Private Experience?

  • Guaranteed Sanctuary Admissions: Akumal Bay is a heavily protected marine reserve with strictly enforced daily capacity limits. Going with us means your premium entry passes and local certified water guides are 100% booked and secured in advance.
  • Crowd-Free Marine Sightseeing: Large tour groups in the water can be chaotic, reducing visibility and disturbing the marine life. Your private guide focuses entirely on your party, ensuring everyone swims safely, captures great views, and interacts respectfully with the environment.
  • Seamless VIP Logistics: We pick you up directly from your hotel or rental lobby and return you straight to your door. No multi-hotel hops or wasting hours of your vacation time in transit.

FAQ: Private Tulum & Turtle Snorkel Tour

Is there a minimum age required to snorkel with the turtles?

There is no strict minimum age to join the tour, making it highly popular for families. For the open-water snorkeling portion, a minimum height of 1.20 meters (3.9 feet) is recommended for safety. Children under 5 are welcome to enjoy the shallow, calm shoreline under parental supervision while older family members snorkel.

Is a life jacket mandatory even if I am an experienced swimmer?

Yes, absolutely. Under federal environmental laws protecting the Akumal marine reserve, wearing a life jacket is strictly mandatory for all visitors regardless of swimming ability. This ensures effortless flotation, prevents swimmers from accidentally diving down to touch the turtles, and protects the fragile coral reef from being stepped on.

What happens if we don't see any turtles during our swim?

Because the turtles reside and feed in the bay permanently, they are in their natural, un-caged habitat. While they are wild animals, our specialized private guides maintain a proven sighting success rate higher than 95%. It is incredibly rare not to encounter them on this excursion.

Are there any health or safety restrictions for this tour?

The walking tour of Tulum is suitable for all ages. However, due to federal safety protocols, the open-water snorkeling activity in Akumal is not recommended for pregnant women, individuals with severe cardiac conditions, or guests with health issues that limit moderate physical exertion. Basic swimming familiarity is recommended for the snorkel portion.

What Our Guests Are Saying

Alberto is very knowledgeable and excellent guide. Score: Recommended: YES Anonymous from
Tulum and Snorkel with Marine Turtles Absolutely awesome private tour with an exceptional guide and driver. I don't quite remember the driver's name, but I believe the guide was Victor. The first leg of the tour was the ride to Tulum. Communication prior to the trip was very good. My family was split between 2 different hotels, but they graciously picked us up at both. They offer cold waters in the van, and it is nice and cool inside. On the way to the pyramids, Victor gave us a quick and interesting history of Cancun and the Mayans, and he did a great job of narrating in English and Spanish. He was very knowledgable of the culture and history. I had taken Mayan history courses in college and found his retelling to be accurate. We had a few little kids in the car, and Victor also tailored the narrative to them so that they remained interested. In Tulum, we left all of our baggage in the van. Victor handled getting all the tickets and guiding us to the correct lines. As we walked through Tulum, he gave us an in depth dive into the culture and the significance of the structures. It was very interesting, and he was able to answer any questions we threw his way. After the pyramids, we got back into the van and headed towards Akumal to swim with turtles. The drive was fairly short, about 15 minutes. Once there, he guided us to the main hut to get ready. The dive center took over from there and provided all we needed. Our diving instructors were fantastic and spoke both English and Spanish. They fitted us with life jackets, snorkels, and fins, so it was fairly easy to swim in the waters. We were out a good ways from the shore for a while, and we managed to see 3 turtles, which was amazing. Definitely much more worthwhile to see animals in their natural habitat than in captivity. There were also plenty of fish around. The turtles were well worth the trip! After snorkeling, we walked over to great little restaurant near the shore, La Cueva del Pescador. It was an excellent little hut that served great fajitas and beverages. Their fish fajitas were fantastic. Exactly the kind of local restaurant I was hoping to visit. Overall, I definitely recommend this trip, especially the snorkeling with the turtles! The guides were knowledgable, fun, and respectful. Score: Recommended: YES Daniel Perez from Austin, TX
Our Tour Guide Victor Manual was amazing. He was very knowledgeable, attentive, personable and fun! He took care of throughout the whole tour! Benjamin the driver was also very good and attentive. Score: Recommended: YES Liz Gonzales from Newport Beach, CA
My husband and I did the Tulum and snorkel with marine turtles at Akumal tour on March 14. It was AMAZING! Our guide Angel was so knowledgeable and passionate about the ruins and the Mayan culture. Jesus our driver was wonderful as well. I was very nervous about snorkeling but Lupita from the dive shop in Akumal was so great at calming me down and making sure I felt safe. The restaurant they took us to afterwards was delicious, it was one of the best meals of our trip. We would definitely recommend this tour. Score: Recommended: YES Chelsea from Columbia, MO

Absolutely excellent. Our guide, Sergio, had an incredible knowledge of the Tulum ruins and their Mayan history. He and our driver were attentive and willing to answer any questions. Akumal Bay was a beautiful place to snorkel, and since we went on a July morning it was neither too hot nor too busy at either location. Score: Recommended: YES Anonymous from Ontario, Canada
Alejandro was simply AMAZING during our private tour through Tulum. His knowledge about the ruins, Mayan culture and their beliefs was literally mesmerizing. Our snorkel tour with green sea turtles in Akumal after was breathtaking. And lunch after was delicious. We had a WONDERFUL day. Highly recommended!! Loved everything about this tour. Tour guide was knowledgeable and the snorkeling guide really took care of us. The lunch was delicious! The only we wished was to spend some personal time to enjoy akumal bay. We got there. Snorkeled and left for lunch. We didn't get to walk around and actually enjoy the beach. Cancun Adventure did an excellent job in helping me make the choice for this tour and I am extremely happy with the decision. I appreciated the online chat ability to get clarification on the tour and the Cancun Adventure representative was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and took the time to ensure all of my questions were answered. The online booking process was easy and I will definitely book future tours through this company. For the tour itself, I couldn't have been more pleased with the quality of service and it was money and time well spent for the private tour. Our guide, Sergio, was outstanding. He was very knowledgeable, spoke excellent English and was very engaging throughout the day. Sergio and our driver (unfortunately I don't recall his name) picked us up at our condo promptly and were both extremely professional and approachable. We were made to feel comfortable and welcome, were provided water and an umbrella from the sun, and we never felt rushed but they were able to keep us on pace to see and experience the tour thoroughly without having to hurry or miss anything. Sergio provided an excellent overview of Mayan history and practices on our drive to Tulum and was clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about his work. He was very patient with our questions and offered to provide as much information as we could digest. I felt like I finished the tour of Tulum with a great appreciation of the history and culture but I know it was only the tip of the iceberg of Sergio's knowledge. Tulum was awe-inspiring just to walk through but having a guide like Sergio who was able to point out details and background made the visit so much more rewarding. We were given time to do some shopping in Tulum (there are a lot of great shops outside of the park). After Tulum, we were taken to Akumal. This tour was apparently contracting with a new, local business to provide the private snorkel trip with sea turtles. The contract business did not have changing rooms but, again as a credit to Sergio, he negotiated with the contract business for the business to pay for our access to private changing rooms in a nearby business. The contract company did not have lockers (they used plastic containers that did not lock) and you stored your personal belongings in the plastic container until you returned. The snorkel guide (a native Mayan whose name I don't recall) was friendly but a bit distracted and talked to a variety of tourists and other people in the water, leaving me to swim around on my own at times. The snorkel guide did point out turtles, offered to take photos of me and guided me through the reef. I saw numerous turtles, stingrays and a variety of colorful fish. After the snorkeling was finished, we were taken to a local restaurant (sorry, I don't recall the name), which was included in the price of the tour, and the food was outstanding. The restaurant had vegetarian options and everything was fresh and delicious. After lunch, we were taken back to our condo and got back a little after 3:00 pm. Even with a busy vacation week with a lot of outstanding activities, this tour stands out as my favorite. The activities were great but it was the quality of the guide, Sergio, that made this the most memorable and enjoyable activity of the entire vacation. This tour was well worth the time and money spent on it and I would highly recommend you request Sergio. Score: Recommended: YES Susan from
