Private Tour: Tulum & Dolphin Swim in the Riviera Maya
Tour Overview
Why choose between history and adventure when you can have both in a single day? This private tour pairs a morning at the Tulum ruins—the Maya city that once watched over Caribbean sea trade—with an afternoon dolphin swim at Delphinus Riviera Maya. Two very different worlds—ancient stone and Caribbean marine life—tied together with your own private transport and guide from start to finish.
Forget the shared shuttles that pull out at dawn and crisscross half the coast picking people up. Here, the vehicle and the guide are yours alone: we head straight from your door, reach the ruins while they're still quiet, and whisk you off to the dolphin habitat with no downtime in between. You decide how long to linger at each temple and how much to enjoy the dolphins; we string the two activities together so the day just flows.
Tulum: the great Maya port on the Caribbean
The day kicks off in Tulum, known to the Maya as Zamá—“dawn”—because it was among the first stretches of land to catch the sunrise over the sea. More than a fortress, it was a bustling port that controlled coastal sea trade: canoes loaded with obsidian, jade, salt, honey, and cacao moved through these waters. Your certified bilingual guide will help you read the city through that lens, too—the lens of the sea—a perspective that ties in perfectly with the second half of your day.
- A city that lived off the sea: you'll learn how the Maya used the reef barrier and its natural gaps to bring their boats in and out, and why this spot was so key to the peninsula's trade routes.
- The temple that guided sailors: its main building doubled as a beacon for mariners; line up its window openings with the gap in the reef and it pointed the way to the safe passage into the little sandy cove tucked beneath the cliff.
- Time for yourself: you'll get free time to wander among the iguanas basking on the stones and grab your best shots of the site against the Caribbean before heading off to meet the dolphins.
Swimming with dolphins: an unforgettable encounter
After the culture comes the thrill. We head to Delphinus Riviera Maya, set in a protected natural environment, where you'll take part in an interaction program led by marine-mammal specialists. You'll feel the texture of their skin, hear their sounds above and below the water, and watch their grace and agility up close.
- Full Primax program (about 45 min): orientation talk, free interaction, platform time, a hug, a kiss, hand signals, jumps, and a controlled free swim.
- Expert supervision: certified trainers look out for your safety and the animals' the entire time; a life jacket is required, so you don't need to be a strong swimmer.
- Small groups: the interaction runs in small groups (about 4 people) to keep the experience close-up and high-quality.
A relaxed bite, no rushing
Between the culture and the thrill, there's one stop you won't want to skip: the table. We set aside time to eat at an easy pace, with dishes that showcase regional cuisine, and to refuel before getting in the water with the dolphins. A meal built around your group—not a buffet tray against the clock.
What makes this tour different?
- No pickup route: we leave straight from your hotel—no burning the morning stopping at one resort after another to round up other passengers.
- Culture and marine life in one day: combine an archaeological icon with a dolphin encounter in a single outing—no booking two separate tours or juggling two dates.
- Attention just for your group: driver and guide focused only on you, happy to slow the pace at Tulum or stretch out photo time whenever you feel like it.
- No hidden meal costs: lunch and a cooler of drinks are baked right into the price—plenty of competitors tack those on separately.
- The fine print, up front: we book your Tulum admission and dolphin program ahead of time and give you a heads-up before you go about the state tax and the habitat's photo package, so there are no surprises at the register.

Frequently asked questions about the Private Tulum & Dolphin Swim Tour
What's the minimum age or height to swim with dolphins?
The swim program calls for a minimum height of about 3'3″ (1 m), and minors must be accompanied and supervised by an adult in the water at all times. The child rate applies to ages 5–11. Pregnant women can't do the swim for safety reasons, but they can enjoy the rest of the tour and cheer everyone on from the observation area.
Can I bring my own camera to photograph the dolphin swim?
No. Per habitat rules (and to avoid distracting or stressing the animals), no cameras, phones, or personal items are allowed in the swim area. The center offers professional photo and video packages you can pick up right there. We tell you ahead of time so you can decide without any pressure: at Tulum, you're free to take all the photos you want with your own gear.
If the tour is private, is the dolphin swim just for my group too?
Tulum, the guide, and the transport are exclusive to your group. The swim itself takes place at Delphinus Riviera Maya in groups of about 4. If there are fewer of you, you may share the activity. The habitat sets the schedule to safeguard animal welfare and keep the experience high-quality.
Is it safe if I'm not a strong swimmer or traveling with kids?
Yes. A life jacket is required throughout the program, so you'll float effortlessly, and you'll always be with specialized trainers. And because it's a private tour, we tailor the day's pace to your group and make whatever stops you need.
